Nexstar, LSN Strike Local Mobile Pact

Feb 9, 2010

-By Katy Bachman

Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced Tuesday (Feb. 9) an agreement with LSN Mobile Local Wireless to bring its 33 local community Web portals to mobile users. The new capability puts Nexstar's local content, including video, on-demand video, geo-targeted weather updates and tweets on video-enabled mobile devices.

As part of the partnership with LSN Mobile, Nexstar plans to offer wireless apps for the iPhone, Blackberry, Droid and other smartphones, along with SMS/text-messaging to deliver geo-targeted mobile alerts for breaking news, weather, sports scores and more.

Launched in 2007, Nexstar's Web portal strategy, rolled out as a complement to the reach of its 63 TV stations, has developed into a lucrative revenue stream for the group. In the first nine months of 2009, Nexstar's e-media revenue grew 13 percent over the same period the previous year.

"Nexstar's growth in online revenues put them in the top 10 fastest-growing local online advertising companies. Nearly all of their broadcast TV peers experienced negative growth in 2009," said Gordon Borrell of Borrell Associates.

Nexstar is also working with LSN to offer local wireless apps. In addition to Nexstar, LSN Mobile provides platforms for a number of TV groups such as ABC, NBC Universal, Cox Broadcasting, LIN TV and Gray Television, for a total of 420 sites in 210 markets.
