CBS Radio Adds to Sports Lineup

Jan 19, 2010

-By Katy Bachman

CBS Radio is adding to its Sports radio lineup, announcing Tuesday (Jan. 19) the launch of the first FM Sports station in Pittsburgh. Beginning Feb. 15, WBZW-FM will become Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan with new call letters, KDKA-FM.

The station's former Contemporary Hit Radio format will be "blended" with the Hot Adult Contemporary format on WZPT-FM.

In addition to the on-air launch, The Fan will also be streamed online and across mobile platforms including the iPhone and Blackberry.

The Fan is the latest in a string of new Sports stations rolled out by CBS Radio in Detroit, Baltimore, Dallas, Washington, D.C., and Boston joining the iconic Sports station, WFAN-AM in New York.

93.7 The Fan will be the third Sports station in the market, taking on the top rated Sports brand in the market, WEAE-AM, ESPN Radio's owned and operated station. Hoping to get a leg up on ESPN's national brand, 93.7 will be programmed locally by Terry Foxx, who was most recently program director for ESPN Radio in Bristol, Conn.

"Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan is being built for Pittsburgh's sports fans who are simply the best in the country. We'll feature an array of opinionated, compelling and very talented local talk-show personalities who will be highly engaged in discussions and commentary driven by our listeners," said Michael Young, senior vp and market manager of CBS Radio in Pittsburgh.

The merged format of WBZW and WZPT will feature current hits plus favorites from the 90s and 2000s. Several personalities from WBZW will also move over to WZPT, including morning host Bubba.
