Layoffs Reach The Advocate

Oct 30, 2009

-By Lucia Moses

The Advocate laid off a handful of staffers this week, joining a parade of magazines that has slimmed its ranks in recent weeks amid the continued economic slump.

"We are consolidating to make sure we're operating as effectively as possible for 2010," said Steve Macias, senior vp at parent Regent Media, confirming the cuts. He said the people affected were editors and production staffers.

The gay-themed publication converted from a biweekly to a monthly early this year to save publishing costs. Macias said the new cuts were positions identified as redundant as the company has expanded, acquiring The Advocate and other gay-focused media properties in recent years.

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and incredibly this is my sixth annual column dedicated to the best and worst on the small screen. And as always, there are plenty of turkeys stuffing up the airwaves just waiting to be plucked by Mr. TV.
